KIMONO

I've always been fascinated by the beauty of traditional japanese kimono and I especially love dolls in them. I would like to start a small kimono line with traditional japanese fabrics but also western themes, being just enough accurate but with a little playfulness thrown in.

Each kimono takes a great deal of time to make and uses up a lot of fabric. They are all fully lined and a lot of the sewing needs to be done by hand, with invisible stitches. They are close to the way real kimonos are structured, but somewhat simplified because of scale limitations.

Ume blossoms on brown - SOLD OUT

A traditional japanese print of ume blossoms on wonderfully textured fabric in shades of beige, red and greyish blue on a brown background. The lining is cream double gauge with brown polka dots and the obi is made with an aged blue gingham fabric decorated with vintage lace. The obi-age is made of cream muslin and there is no obi-jime.

The cost is $120 and it cannot be remade as I sadly don't have any more of this fabric.

A few things to keep in mind when wearing kimono is that the left side must always overlap the right - the opposite is only used for burying the dead. It must be wrapped tightly around the body, and not showing off the cute lining! The length must be enough to cover the ankles, and the obi must reveal the fold at the waist. The fold is there because women's kimonos come in one length; you're meant to pull it up and adjust to your height. Japanese zori is essential footwear! I recommend those by Azone, which are a molded sock your doll can wear like a shoe, that then snaps onto the zori. Very practical!
